Stretch goals 4 & 5 unlocked!

We've done it! We finally hit 21(k)!

On this very special total, we've unlocked 2 more stretch goals. First up: Foiling for all our celebrity cards. We're humbled to have the involvement of our six celebrities, and what better way to honour their involvement than giving their cards a gold foil finish to make them stand out even further.

Stretch Goal 4

But that's not all, we've also unlocked foil backing for all the cards! Now your cards will match the box for serious wow-factor.

Stretch goal 5

As we move into the final straight with just over 8 days of the campaign to go, it's time for our last stretch goal: the card stock upgrade!

The final stretch goal

We're already printing on a high quality black core stock. But if we hit this goal, we're going to go to increase card thickness to the maximum that our sleek box design will allow. We want to keep this game slim and light for a wide range of reasons. But we also want these to be thickest, plushest cards reasonable. Can we do it?

James Grime's card revealed

James' card uses the famous sequence of triangle numbers!

James Grime's card

How the card works:

Like our previous number sequence cards, this card's value is equal to the number in the triangle sequence corresponding to X. So if X = 3, this card is worth 6 (the 3rd triangle number). This card can get big quite fast, which can be difficult, but it also provides some odd numbers which are extra helpful for making 21. (In fact if X=6, this card *is* 21!)

Triangle numbers are often helpful when building systems in which each object needs to be connected once, to every other object. Imagine 10 people in a room, all need to shake hands once with everyone else in the room... How many handshakes need to happen? This sequence will help you out!

That's all for now,

James & Jaya

Stretch goal 3 unlocked + Katie Steckles' card + Canada friendly shipping

Stretch goal 3 unlocked

Another stretch goal down! Those wallpapers have been unlocked - which we'll be sharing with every backer who has pledged for a reward. They're going to look great.

Next-up: Foil celebrity cards!

As I said, we want this edition to feel truly premium: a gold foil effect on every celebrity card will not only raise production value but serve to symbolically highlight the unique ruleset each of these special cards will possess.

Katie Steckles' card revealed

Our next celebrity card is here! This time it has to be QI's very own Katie Steckles:

Katie Steckles' card

Katie's card is the sum of factors (X).  Katie Steckles suggested so many cool concepts and mechanics it was difficult to pick one (Some were whole expansions to themselves! Maybe they will be made real one day - if this KS continues at the pace we've had so far) but this one won the day.

How the card works

This card had the value of the sum of the factors of X. So if X is 2, this card is valued as 3. 2 is divisible by itself and 1. So the sum of these two factors is 3. Whereas if X is 4, its values is 7 because 4 is divisible by itself, 2 and 1: 4+2+1 = 7.

Factors are not only a critical part of number theory, this card makes fiendish use of them. The output can fluctuate up and down considerably by just adjusting X slightly. Very helpful if you can make it work, but they're trending bigger and bigger - so watch out! No single-digit-only changes to help you here.

Like all the other cards in this series, if you want to use a negative number for X you can. In the game, we treat X as the absolute value of X multiplied by -1. So if X is -4 then the result is -7. (X can't be 0).

Attention Canadians - friendly shipping added!

We've looked into it and it looks like we will be able to offer Canada friendly shipping with the game now! We'll manage all shipping and tax in the PM and then the game should just arrive with any duties paid.

That's all for now!

3X funded + Stretch goal 2 unlocked + Marcus du Sautoy card spotlight
about 1 year ago – Sat, Sep 30, 2023 at 11:01:23 AM

We're well over 48 hours in now and the pace has been fantastic. Thanks to everyone who has backed so far. That's it for early birds now - but the game is still available for only £15 - £10 off RRP!

Stretch goal 2 unlocked

We passed another threshold this morning - unlocking the box logo UV!

This is another quality upgrade that won't make an appearance in a mass market edition. We think it adds something just a little special to this fantastic limited edition product.

Stretch goal 3 is now less than £1,000 away. This time its a set of intricate wallpapers based on the mathematics inspired 21X card back. Can we get them by end of Sunday?!

Spotlight: Marcus du Sautoy's card

We announced our very first custom celebrity card back in June this year: Marcus Du Sautoy's Xth prime card, with its gorgeous Ulam spiral design (that helpfully shows you which prime is next!):

Of course, this being Professor du Sautoy - author of the Music of the Primes - his card had to be prime based!

How the card works

The Xth prime card works like this: the card's value is the same as another number in a given sequence. In this case - the Primes. So if X is 3, then the value of the the card is the 3rd prime: 5. But if X were 7, its value is the 7th prime: 17.

This card is powerful: It's full of helpful odd numbers that make it easier to make 19 or 21. But those numbers are getting bigger and, on average, further apart as you go.  This makes it very tricky if you also need X to be a big number!

That's all for now,

James

2X Funded + Foil box unlocked + Tom Crawford's card!
about 1 year ago – Fri, Sep 29, 2023 at 04:45:40 AM

We're just over the 24 hour mark and we've well passed double our goal!

Stretch goal 1 unlocked!

Late last night we breezed through stretch goal 1: the foil box detailing. That means 21X's gorgeous maths-inspired pattern will now be highlighted in an elegant metallic effect: really doing justice to our graphic artist's fantastic design.

Stretch goal 2 will enhance the box even more by giving that logo a reflective glow to catch the light. And it now looks like it might be in reach!

Tom Crawford's card revealed

Our next celebrity custom card is here! This time it's from the one and only TomRocksMaths:

Tom Crawford's card

Tom's card is the Xth digit of Euler's number. To say that Tom is a fan of Euler's number would be an understatement - its tattooed on his body!

How the card works

The card has the same value as the Xth digit of Euler. So if X is currently 3, the it has the same value as the 3rd digit of Euler: 8. But if you choose 4 for the value of X, it will fall to 2: the 4th digit.

As well as being an important number in mathematics in general (especially to logarithms) and to everyday issues like compound interest, it's a fun and tricksy card. The sequence will see X pop-up and down quite wildly - although thankfully always in single digits!

Katie Steckles posted a fantastic article about 21X on Aperiodical. It also included some 21X inspired puzzles! Enter the competition and you could win a prize!

We're 1X funded!
about 1 year ago – Thu, Sep 28, 2023 at 08:20:44 AM

We've funded!

3000 is a pretty useless number as far as winning a game of 21X goes... but as far as making the game goes, we're off to a flying start!

Thank you so much everyone for your early support. These first steps are the most important.

Which means we can now start talking about stretch goals! The first of which is:

This limited edition run is going to be top quality - and this metallic foil detaling all over the box will make it even better. We're determined that 21X will always get a reaction when you pull it out of the bag. Let's get that foiling!

There's more where that came from. But word of mouth is the most powerful tool to get us there. So if you've got a friend who would enjoy 21X, let them know!

Thank you again for your support,

Jaya & James
